Buying a Winter Pea Coat

Published by Brett Penston under Outdoor Sporting

Pea Coat
Image by Ben Lawson via Flickr

A pea coat is an excellent choice for outerwear during the cold winter months. Although this coat was originally designed for navy sailors, today’s versions are much more attractive. You can find these coats in a variety of colors as well as in the traditional navy hue. Designers are now offering pea coats in bright colors such as red and yellow. One of these coats will be an eye-catching addition to your winter wardrobe.

Features for these coats such as the sleeves and buttons, have also evolved over time. Now some designers opt for toggles rather than buttons, while others use large, shiny buttons to accent their coats.

The basic sleeve has also changed. You can find accessorized sleeves and even kimono sleeves. These changes have brought the pea coat into modern fashion while preserving its original style. One should also consider the material that these coats are made in when looking for one of these coats. In the beginning pea coats only came in wool. To make sure you have the warmest coat you need a coat that is 100% wool, not a cotton/wool blend. If you don’t like the heaviness of a wool coat, try looking for cashmere, it’s just as warm but considerably lighter.

The last thing you should know about a pea coat is that it is very stylish. Since it has a shorter length, you can show off the great jeans or slacks you are wearing. And it gives you a clean, polished look without adding a lot of bulk.

Men and women alike can look their best in a stylish pea coat. If you’re in the market for a new winter coat, a pea coat is an excellent choice.

Who Claimed February Is A Miserable Time Of Year?

Published by Wendy Goldsmith under Winter Sports

Very few people look forward to February, a month that falls in the thick of winter and often leaves us feeling as if the cold weather will never end.

While you may not be looking forward to the second month of the year, you should also keep a few things in mind that give you something to look forward to. The month isn\’t as bad as people make it out to be.

Let\’s take a look at some of the highlights of this month, as you might even be inspired by some of them. They\’ll help to pass the time, and the month will fly by and be done with before you had a chance to think about it.

There are a few holidays during the course of the month, and holidays always help to make things interesting. While Groundhog\’s Day, the first one to hit during February, isn\’t too interesting, anyone who hates winter will appreciate it since it truly marks the impending arrival of spring.

Less than two weeks later, Valentine\’s Day hits us, and it comes on the weekend in 2010. This may give you the opportunity to go somewhere special with your loved one if you\’d like to enjoy yourself as the time passes.

A week after that, President\’s Day comes. Students love this for the fact that a day off or an extended break may come with it, but many employers offer the day off to their workforce too. Enjoy your free time if you don\’t have to work on this holiday.

Then, there are a few sports milestones to look forward to as well. For one, the Winter Olympics begin during February. In Vancouver this year, they\’re sure to bring a good amount of action to the television sets of millions around the world.

Racing fans will also be delighted to know that NASCAR once again resumes, as the year starts off with the Daytona 500 on the second Sunday of the month.

Blue Mountain Chalets: A Whole New World Of Family Fun.

Published by Adriana Noton under Winter Sports

A vacation in the Blue Mountain region close to Ontario in Canada will expose your family to a whole new world of fun. No matter what time of the year you go, there will at any stage be lots to see and do. For the family man it simply doesn\’t get any better than a stay at one of the various Blue Mountain chalets.

In the first place staying in a chalet will cost much less for a family of four or more than a hotel stay would cost. For four people you will have to pay for at least two rooms in a hotel, pushing up the costs quite dramatically. A week for four in a decent quality hotel could seriously damage your family budget and not leave enough money to really enjoy yourselves and do everything you wanted to do.

Another aspect to keep in mind is that if you opt to stay in a hotel, it won\’t have any facilities where you can prepare meals for your family. All of you will therefore have to eat out every single meal, whether in a restaurant at the hotel or somewhere in town. This is bound to sharply escalate your holiday expenses and once again cause you to have less money to spend on other activities.

Another factor that makes a chalet such a good choice compared to a hotel room is simply the issue of personal space. Most chalets are quite spacious. There will normally be an area where the family can relax, play games, watch television et cetera. The majority of chalets will either have a large counter with bar stools where the whole family can gather for a meal, or otherwise there will be a dining area.

In an area like Blue Mountain, which gets very cold in winter, many chalets offer a fireplace where the whole family can snuggle up on a cold evening. Somehow the heat provided by an electric heater simply doesn\’t offer the same ambiance than a crackling log fire. This makes for quality family time that all of you will remember many years into the future.

Many chalets even offer facilities like a pool table where the family can keep themselves busy during a long evening when it\’s perhaps raining outside. Some even offer private swimming pools and hot tubs. Those that don\’t have private pools mostly have access to a communal swimming pool, which is great if you are visiting during summer.

If you should opt to stay in a chalet it of course doesn\’t mean that you\’re cut off from life in the vicinity. You can go out as often as you want. There are so many restaurants in the immediate area that you can dine out at a different place every night of the week. If mom and dad want to break away to a cozy, candle-lit venue and the children want pizza, it won\’t be hard to find exactly what each group want conveniently close to each other.

Blue mountain chalets are in many respects perfect for a family holiday. There are so much to see and to do in the area that nobody will ever be bored. There\’s entertainment for all age groups and every member of the family will return home rejuvenated and ready for life\’s challenges.

Planning to ski or snowboard but don\’t have a place to stay? Save money by staying in Blue Mountain chalets instead of hotels. Enjoy the comfort of a home while being close to the mountain in these Blue Mountain accommodations. With breathtaking views and in an area with many unique experiences, you\’re bound to enjoy yourself.

Ski Vacations for Beginners

Published by Lawrence Gilbert under Winter Sports

Choosing a Ski Resort

For the novice skier, it is advised to select a ski vacation in a location that is suitable to all levels of expertise: That way all members of your group, no matter their level, can make the most out of the vacation. Most destinations do offer various ski runs, ranging from wide, smooth beginner\’s runs, to expert courses, which can be to be complicated and a little dangerous.

Beginner skiers should obtain ski lessons from ski tutors at the resort. Ideally, the new skier should take lessons before the vacation to learn the basics. A beginner should lease their ski equipment because purchasing it before learning what one requires from the equipment may be a costly error.

What to Take with you

Beginner skiers often underestimate how essential proper ski clothing is: An average jacket and mitts are not going to be appropriate. Gloves should be waterproof with a grip, jackets lightweight and wind-resistant and trousers (\”salopettes\”) designed for the needs of skiers.

In addition, skiers should purchase thick socks, a warm hat and scarf, sunglasses (the glare off the snow can be intense) and sunscreen (it is easy to get burned). For the best comfort and safety, a new skier should wear thin layers that allow for movement, rather than one extremely thick layer. Most ski resorts shops carry ski-clothing rentals.

Essential Extras

A lift pass is needed to give access to the ski slopes. They can be purchased as part of a vacation package or purchased in resort each day (though you may experience long lines at popular resorts). Costs are dependent on where you are, but many deals can be found by looking on the internet, asking the hotel concierge, purchasing in advance or buying for a group.

Always check what time the last lift leaves the slopes each day and set up a meeting point and time with your group. It is also an excellent idea to have a mobile phone with you for any problems.

A ski holiday for a beginner can be a great experience provided that they do a bit of research to make sure that the Thomson ski resort they have chosen is the right one for them. Get some tips from travel writer Lawrence Gilbert from Travel Bites

The Real Estate Market in British Columbia

Published by Adriana Noton under Winter Sports

British Colombia, Canada, is well-known throughout the world for its gorgeous and dazzling mountain views, vibrant and bustling cities, a strong and diverse culture, and its numerous recreational activities such as the stunning golf courses and best ski condos. In British Columbia, the BC real estate market has always been a booming business. However, due to the recent down turn in the economy, the British Columbia real estate market had experienced a brief cooling off period. Now, this exciting and beautiful Canadian province has started to make a strong recovery. A distinct bounce back in consumer demand has turned a possible gloomy 2010 into a very strong year for home sales. A boost in consumer confidence, increased consumer demand, and low mortgage interest rates, have all played an important role in improving the British Columbia real estate market.

Real Estate developers are not only attracting retirees, but they are also attracting an innovative young work force. Many developers are responding to consumer demands for a private piece of paradise where people can enjoy the beautiful scenery, but still have access to a vibrant and culturally diverse city such as Vancouver. Whether you are looking for a cozy and private residential home or looking for new real estate investment opportunities, British Columbia provides many real estate options for the informed investor. Investors and home buyers are recognizing these opportunities. For instance, the average annual MLS (R) residential price in the province is expected to rise 2 per cent. In 2010, many experts are also expecting to see another increase of 4 per cent in the price of real estate. More specifically, home sales in 2010 are projected to increase an additional 8 per cent.

The interior housing markets of British Colombia are also seeing vigorous consumer demand because of stronger market conditions and current low mortgage rates that are boosting home sales. Vancouver, BC has recently seen a large jump in quarterly sales. According to figures released by the Canadian Real Estate Association, Vancouver is fast becoming one of the hottest real estate markets in Canada. As well, Vancouver and Victoria have declared near record sales this past fall.

Many regions across the Province are now seeing strong home sales. For instance, home sales in the Fraser Valley and the city of Victorian have seen a rapid growth in home sales. In fact, sales in Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, and Victoria have boosted the province\’s overall home sales total to almost record levels. In December of 2009, The British Columbia Real Estate Association reported that Multiple Listing Service (R) residential sales in the province have made a remarkable increase this past November. However, it is important to note that the demand in these residential sales markets is expected to level off in 2010 as demand is exhausted and home prices begin to rise again.

With the current low interest rates available on mortgages, many experts suggest that it may be a good time to look at the real estate investment opportunities in British Colombia. As the economy slowly rebounds, one may find themselves with a lucrative investment in a beautiful province.

If you are looking for BC real estate, or even just the best ski condos around the area, then look no further! We offer the best locations and prices!

Experience Aspen USA Ski Resort

Published by Benedict Perez under Winter Sports

Aspen is one of the most favorite destinations for those who love skiing and snowboarding. It was originally was a silver-mining town during the 19th century. When the prices crashed down, it had taken out the fortune of the entire town shrinking its population from 12,000 to 700. It was on 1930s when it was realized that it could be a good place to ski. Currently, Aspen USA Ski Resort is famous for its mountains and ski destinations as well as a favorite tourism spot.

Aspen USA Ski Resort, alongside with Snowmass Village, is located in the Elk Mountain branch. This ski resort offers four major mountains which are suitable for skiing and boarding. These include the Aspen Mountain, the Buttermilk, Snowmass and the Aspen Highland. Whatever your skills would be, you will definitely find a place in one of these ski areas.

One of the most popular ski resorts is the Aspen Mountain. Also known as Ajax by the locals, it lies in one of the foothills of Elk Mountain just south of the town. It offers runs suitable for experienced skiers and boarders. Though not particularly high, it has been a favorite ski destination of the famous and rich personalities. Aside from the challenging slopes, Aspen Mountain is well-known for its unique resort features. One can enjoy the world\’s first skier-only terrain park and its regular snowcat tours. You can also play in the 18 hole golf-frisbee course and enjoy the magnificent view of the countryside while riding on the Silver Queen Gondola.

Aspen Highland. Located next to Aspen Mountain is the Aspen Highland. It is more like a local mountain, offering a more advanced and intense run which includes the new and famous Highland Bowl. It was on 2002 when it opened and has been the pride of the Aspen Highland.

Snowmass on the other hand is a perfect ski destination for family bonding and tours. It is one of the largest ski resorts in Aspen. Usually, it takes about 25 minutes to travel from the town to Snowmass. To further provide its guests a rewarding and memorable visit in the place, recent developments have been made by the management. One of which is the new detachable quad chairlift. This can lift you up at about 2,212 feet high and can carry around 2,000 per hour. At this height, the guest would have a perfect view of the mountain, the Maroon Bells and the central Rockies. Aside from the spectacular view, Snowmass also offers ski terrains, parks, glided terrains and mogul runs.

If you are an inexperienced skier or boarder, do not be depressed for there is an appropriate location for you – the Buttermilk. Though it may be surrounded by big and famous resorts, the Buttermilk itself had made its name. Actually, it is famous that it has been used by the ESPN for Winter X-games, not only once but for several times already.

The Buttermilk specializes in two major areas, one of which is that the resort is focused on for beginners and amateurs. Aside from the increasing difficulty level of its slopes, from beginner to a more advanced, it is also equipped with a world-renowned ski schools.

The other major area of Snowmass is for boarding. It has superpipe and over 30 rails and of course, a place for beginners which include the beginner\’s lane. Buttermilk also houses the longest terrain park which is about 2 miles and is very suitable for those who love boarding.

Skiing is risky but it is a hobby that everyone will surely love to play. There are certain sites like Aspen USA Ski Resort offering this opportunity to play the game. Or you may want to try Aspen Colorado Best Lift ticket Deals.

Learn To Snowboard In A Day

Published by Richard Dunne under Winter Sports

The main snowboarding styles are freeride, freestyle and alpine. Freeride snowboarding involves riding down the face of a mountain, taking advantage of the landscape\’s natural bumps and curves. Freestyle centers on tricks, such as spins, jumps and grabbing the board in mid-air. Snowboarding alpine style is similar to skiing, in that it emphasizes building up speed and making sharp turns.

Two different snowboarding stances can be adopted. In the regular stance, which is most popular, your left foot goes first. This contrasts to the goofy stance, whereby the right foot goes in front of the left.

In contrast to skiers, who must shift their weight from left to right to left, snowboarders must shift their weight between their heel and their toe. When you shift your weight forward, you will go downhill and pick up more speed. By shifting your weight backward, the board slows down. By digging your heels down, the edge of the snowboard drags in the snow and causes you to stop.

There are three different types of snowboards available: alpine, freestyle and freeride boards. Each is manufactured uniquely in relation to materials, shape, flex pattern, and size. The best board for you is dependent on your favored style of snowboarding, your height, your shoe size (your heels and toes should not end up in the snow when you turn) and your weight.

Snowboard boots and bindings are essential to connect yourself safely, securely and comfortably to your snowboard. The better quality they are, and the more they fit your personal specifications, the easier it will be to control your board.

You should dress in layers, with the three layer approach widely seen as the best: the base or inner layer, the middle or second layer, and the outer layer. Warmth, weight and moisture management being considered for each of those layers.

Protect your head and ears from low temperatures with a comfortable hat or beanie and, over that, wear a snowboard helmet. Goggles should be worn to protect your eyes from snow, wind and tree branches. Opt for gloves that are waterproof, durable, and have a fleece or other synthetic-based insulated lining.

Whats Hot In Downhill? Snowboarding For Sure!

Published by Clement Call under Winter Sports

A uniquely American sport that was developed in the 1960s and 70s. Snowboarding as a sport was influenced by sports like skate boarding or surfing and downhill snow skiing. In its short time the sport has created its very own special vernacular, its own sub-culture, fashion, and even classes or royalty in it.

Early on, companies had produced product lines like the snurfer. (which was a combination of the words surfing as well as skiing.) The first marketers and makers of these Snowboards like; Chuck Barfoot, Tom Sims, Jake Burton Carpenter and others revolutionized the designs, production, and marketing in building the industry as well as the sport itself. Snowboarding has literally compounded upon itself with its rapid growth in popularity.

Snowboarders have developed their own language, their own disciplines, and more within the sub-culture. Even the fashion styles and trends involved are nursed from the Snowboarding enthusiasts themselves. The whole scene, while being very dominated by a under twenty-five year old demographic group was very comfortable with its cool, or very rebellious status in skiing circles and on the slopes as well. Though this has specifically been steering toward a change recently.

Snowboarding became an official sport for the 1998 Winter Olympic Games held in Nagano, Japan. The U. S. Stands in first place since in total medal wins since that time with a standing total of fourteen thus far. These medals are broken down as, five Gold, four Silver, and five Bronze. Only fitting for the Nation responsible for its development and maturation as a sport.

In the short time passing since, the sport and the demographics around it have developed exponentially. Accompanied by the holding a great individual style and appeal, Snowboarding moved from what was once that occasional band or group of riff-raff on at the top of a slope at the local ski resort, into a growing market segment of consumers in the winter sports and downhill communities. Snowboarders have become representative of a large portion of receipt totals on many ski resort books stretching across the nation, and even the world as well most certainly. It has become hard to believe that at one time, a decade or so ago these Snowboarders were not even allowed on many ski slopes at all!

With growth of the sport, as well as the expansion of its demographic over the years, Snowboarding and Snowboarders have been more and more of an accepted presence on the slopes. In March of two-thousand eight, Taos Ski Valley was one of the last of the major resorts in the United States to allow them. Four years before that, Snowboarding as a sport had a number close to six million five hundred thousand participants. The majority of these being in the eighteen to twenty-four age bracket. A VERY tough thing to ignore business wise in the running of a ski resort.

The Boarder cross, the Half pipe, Racing, the Indy cross, even the Rail Jam have come forward to become what seem to be real fixtures on the professional winter sport events circuit recently. Snowboarding has always, and hopefully will continue to contribute a great deal to the revival of downhill skiing and winter outdoor sports. Large scale events like the Ticket to Ride World Snowboard Tour and the X-Games, and even similar events have become giant attractions in the last two decades. The snowboarders of recent times have carved quite a niche out to call their own, both now and certainly into the future.

The future looks extremely bright for snowboarders, Snowboarding alone as a sport and force. No longer being simply viewed as a band of outlaw individuals seeking something that is different. The snowboard and its user have become generators of their own in the offerings of winter downhill sports overall to people who seek adventures.

Clement runs a site dedicated to action sports guides. If you want to learn how to snowboard this is the site to go to – learn how to adjust your snowboard stance, how to set your bindings and much more.

Economical Winter Pursuits

Published by Alex Beattie under Winter Sports

Snowboarding and skiing are the popular choices for outdoor winter activities, however, there are other great activities to participate in too. Tobogganing, skating and snowshoeing are just as enjoyable, and do not put such a strain on your finances.

Most people have already experienced the exhilarating rush of shooting down the side of a hill whilst gripping tightly to a toboggan, but not since their teenage years. There is no reason to see it as just a child\’s activity though, as lots of winter resorts now have specialist tobogganing areas and slopes. It is a great way for children and adults to spend time together having fun. As for the cost, there is a wide range of toboggans in stores for less than $10, and that is all the you need to participate.

Most winter resorts have a dedicated ice ring, or a nearby lake that has frozen over with thick ice. The basic skills can be picked up within an hour, and you will be effortlessly skating around in just half a day. Skates are available at many stores that sell sports equipment, for around $20-30, and are a particularly good investment as they can be used throughout the year at your local ice ring as well.

Most winter resorts have snowshoeing trails for your enjoyment. Why do you need snowshoes to use the trails? Because strapping on a pair makes walking down and around snow covered landscapes a lot less hardwork, which means that you can cover a lot more ground and experience more of the beautiful surroundings. While if you plan on purchasing your own snowshoes they will cost you around $150-200, you can rent a pair from a store at most resorts for much less – about $20 a day.

So, this winter, do not let money worries stop you from enjoying yourself in the snow!
