Mountainboarding – The Different Kinds Of Mountainboards

Published by Baxter Wells under Outdoor Sporting

There are many kinds of mountainboards out there, and while they all may look exactly alike there are small differences in each one of them that makes them better for certain things. In this article you will learn about the different kinds.

To help you out in understanding the many different kinds, I am going to run through each one and tell you a little about how they are different from others. The general kinds include; freeriding, freestyle, kiteboarding and all around.

A freeride mountainboard is longer and beefier than other boards. It usually will have larger wheels that make it easier and smoother when riding over rough terrain. If you just want to have fun riding down hills, this is a great board.

For riders that want to bust out tricks, slide down rails or ride at a skatepark, a freestyle board will be what they should look for. The focus on these boards is lightness. Aside from being light, these boards also tend to be shorter so spinning can be done more easily.

Perhaps you want to do both freestyle riding and freeriding. A mountainboard that will do well in both areas will be at the middle of the pack. Its length will be average and its weight will be average. There are many mountainboards in that are great for all around riding.

Besides the different sizes and weights of mountainboards there are also other features that can change the experience. This includes the style of foot straps. Foot straps can either be the kind you can step in and out of without un-ratcheting, or they can be snowboard style bindings where your foot is locked in from the start until the end of the ride.

There are lots of mountainboards out there to choose from. If you take a little time to think what kind of riding you want to do, it will make choosing one much easier. Do you want foot straps similar to a snowboard, or do you want to be able to step in and go with simpler foot straps? Are you an all around mountainboarder, a freestyle rider, or a freerider? Whatever your preference, there is a mountainboard out there for you.

Some Things About Fantasy Baseball Leagues

Published by Jacob Biggs under Baseball

Learning some things about Fantasy Baseball Leagues can be well worth doing. If it interests you at all, you owe it to yourself to learn how it works and get involved. Many people today are enjoying this fun way to enjoy the sport of baseball. You can either form a league, or join one that’s already going. A league consists of ten to twelve baseball teams. The number can rise to as many teams as 24. And the rules may cause you to limit your teams to the American or National leagues.

The first move is to choose yourself a team, and the next move is to start the team building. You have two separate options for building the team. You can choose to use the ‘draft’ system, or you can go by way of ‘auction’. The draft is done by rotation and picking players when your turn comes around. You make the decision at the beginning about whether or not to clean the slate after the season. Or you can opt for ‘protecting’, or keeping back, a certain number of players and carry them over to the next season.

When you take the auction route, you start with 260 credits for bidding. And for deciding the eligibility of a player, you go by the fact of whether he’s played at a certain position for 20 or more games last season. If he hasn’t, then you go with the position that he played the most at. It’s easy to catch on to the different

The scoring in fantasy baseball leagues is a pretty involved process. It’s based upon the statistics of the games. Home runs are counted, along with batting averages, runs batted in, stolen bases, wins, saves, run average, home runs, and finally the ‘WHIP’. The WHIP is a figure that’s derived from taking the Walks and dividing them by the Hits. The scores for all the categories get added up at the end of the season to determine the winner.

The rosters are another thing that stays about the same with all leagues. Nine pitchers and five outfielders. Then only one first baseman, one second baseman, one third baseman, a shorstop, a corner man, a middle infielder, and a player that’s miscellaneous. The miscellaneous player can be used in different ways by the two leagues. In the American League he’s used as a ‘designated hitter’. In the National League he’s a ‘utility man’.

The thing about fantasy baseball leagues is that there are so many different ways to play. There’s no way that’s chiseled in stone, and the many variations would take you a while to learn. But for many people, it’s a past time that they have a real passion for. There are places for playing and making money, if you feel you’re up to that caliber of player.

For newbies you can get draft guides and all kinds of help online. There are publications for sale that can assist you in learning the fine points and strategies to propel you into a competitive state in order to compete with seasoned players.

Fantasy baseball leagues are fun ways to enjoy the sport that so many Americans are so passionate about. There’s a lot to learn, but it doesn’t take long if you understand baseball. While there’s a lot more than you can find out in just this one article, there’s plenty of information to be had online if you search for it. Go ahead, take the plunge. You could be the next big winner!

Chicago Blackhawks’ Great Stan Mikita

Published by Ross Everett under Hockey

While NHL hockey players from the country formerly known as Czechoslovakia”as well as other Eastern European nations”are commonplace today, Chicago Blackhawks great Stan Mikita was something of a pioneer. Other players with a flashier game such as Bobby Hull became better known, but you can make a compelling case that Mikita was the best center iceman in professional hockey during the’60s. Mikita was born in Sokolce, in what is now known as Slovakia. He was sent by his family to the Toronto, Ontario area as a young boy to avoid the political strife in the area prior to World War II. An aunt and uncle adopted him, and he changed his name from his birth name of Stanislav Guoth adopting their last name of Mikita. Like most young Canadian boys, he started playing hockey and quickly proved to have an impressive aptitude for the national sport.

Mikita starred for the junior league St. Catherine Teepees as a teenager before making the jump to the NHL joining the Chicago Blackhawks. He quickly became an important part of the Chicago offense in his first and second full seasons as a pro. In’61, he led the team in playoff scoring as they won the Stanley Cup.

The following year was when Mikita really began to make a mark in professional hockey. Centering the dangerous Scooter Line with Ken Wharram on the right wing and Ab McDonald or Doug Mohns on the left wing, he became one of the most feared offensive scorers and playmakers in the league. While he played in the media shadow of Bobby Hull, Mikita was considered by most hockey cognoscenti to be the real offensive catalyst of the team.

Mikitas influence wasnt limited to offensive output”he was a feared defensive player and considered one of the best faceoff men in the game. He also brought about one of the most significant innovations in NHL history, being the first to play with a curved stick blade. This was a very radical modification at the time, but was quickly copied throughout the league to the point where today a player that *doesnt* play with a curved stick is considered something of an anachronism.

Early in his career, Mikita played a tough, rugged style of hockey that made him one of the most penalized players in the game. In the mid’60s, however, he began to play a much cleaner and more sportsmanlike style that would earn him the Lady Byng Trophy for most gentlemanly player twice. The story goes that he had a change of heart when his young daughter asked why he spent so much time sitting in the box on televised games.

In addition to his Stanley Cup victory, Mikitas career accomplishments rank among the most impressive in the history of the sport. He won the Art Ross Trophy as the NHLs leading scorer four times (1964,’65,’67,’68), the Hart Memorial Trophy for Most Valuable Player twice (1967 and’68) and the Lady Byng Trophy in’67 and’68. He remains the only player in NHL history to win the Ross, Hart and Byng trophies in the same season (1967).

Mikita suffered from chronic back ailments later in his career, and finally retired in’80 having played his entire career for the Chicago Blackhawks. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in’83, but became known to a younger generation in a more unusual way. In the movie Waynes World, Wayne and Garth frequently hang out at a donut shop based on the Canadian Tim Hortons chain. The name of the shop is Stan Mikitas Donuts.

Jets Back In Win Column With Win Over Oakland

Published by Ross Everett under Football

The New York Jets and rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez found a sure fire cure to their recent struggles-a game against the lowly Oakland Raiders. Sanchez passed for–3 yards and a touchdown, plus added a rushing touchdown as New York thumped Oakland 38-0 in the largest regular season shutout win in franchise history. Oakland quarterback JaMarcus Russell continued to struggle, and he passed for just 61 yards with three interceptions before he was benched in favor of Bruce Gradowski. The Jets improved their record to 4-3 while the Raiders dropped to 2-5.

NFL football betting enthusiasts who took the Jets as -6 road favorites had smooth sailing throughout the game for an easy pointspread cover. The Jets improved to 4-3 against the spread while the Raiders fell to 3-5 against the number. The 38 points scored went OVER the posted total of 34. Oakland failed to score a touchdown for the 15th game in the past four seasons.

It was such an effortless game that the only thing that Sanchez had to apologize for was surreptitiously eating a hot dog near the end of the contest:

“I want to apologize for that. I wasn’t feeling very good and didn’t eat much before the game, so I was feeling a little queasy. Toward the end of the game, I probably should have eaten one of those bars or something, but someone offered a hot dog, so I grabbed it and tried to be discreet about it, but obviously not discreet enough. So I shouldn’t have done that, and it won’t happen again.”

The Jets capitalized on three early Raiders’ turnovers and started two of their first three drives inside the five yardline. Sanchez praised the defense for making his job easy:

“It makes it so easy on the offense when your defense is playing like that. Hats off to them, they had a heck of a game to shut that team out. I don’t care who we’re playing, that’s a big-time accomplishment for our team.”

Jets’ coach Rex Ryan was very pleased with Sanchez’s performance:

“Sanchez was great. He was just smart with the football. I think sometimes he could have put the ball on a receiver, but he was making sure the ball wasn’t intercepted. It was great to see him respond.”

Raiders’ defensive lineman Richard Seymour, who boldly predicted the team would make the playoffs despite their slow start, was singing a different tune after the rout:

“I don’t think we could have beaten an Oakland high school team today.”

Despite Russell’s struggles, Oakland coach Tom Cable remains committed to him as the team’s starter:

“I thought he was really out of sorts early in the game. I just did not feel like at that point he gave us the best chance to have the success we needed to have offensively and made the move. JaMarcus will continue to be our starter. There is no issue there.”

The Raiders will try to bounce back this weekend in a big rivalry game on the road against the San Diego Chargers. Oakland is +16′ road underdogs with the total set at 42′. They’ll then enjoy a bye week before back to back home games against the Kansas City Chiefs and Cincinnati Bengals. The Jets host Miami this Sunday, with New York a -3′ home favorite and the total set at 40′.

A Legend of English Soccer: Sir Bobby Robson

Published by Ross Everett under Soccer

One of Englands most beloved sporting figures, Sir Bobby Robson, yielded to his courageous fight with cancer recently at the age of 75. British soccer fans mourned his passing after a lifetime in the game, first as a player and then a team manager and elder statesman. Even the often snippy British press had nothing bad to say about the universally respected Robson, headlining their obituaries with adjectives like The Bravest Knight or simply The Legend.

Robson enjoyed a productive career as a player that spanned 20 years and was spent primarily in the English Premier League with Fulham and West Bromwich Albion. He also earned twenty ‘caps’ in International play for England, scoring four goals.

After his retirement in’68 as an active player, he found more fame as a team manager both in England and on the international level. In the EPL, his guidance transformed Ipswich Town from a laughing stock to a league powerhouse and he would lead the club for well over a decade. He would also serve as the England National Team manager for 8 years, as well as managing club teams in Portugal and Spain. He ended his career in British football with a stint as manager of Newcastle United that ended in 2004.

Robson earned even more respect and admiration due to his public battle with cancer. Although a brain tumor left him partially paralyzed in 2006, he never wavered in his commitment to English football or to raising money and awareness for cancer treatment. After being diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in 2007, he dedicated the rest of his life to helping others with the same diagnosis.

Such was the respect for Robson that two other soccer icons not known for seeing eye to eye were quick to pay their respects. Former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho gave this tributes shared his thoughts on Robson:

I wanted to and I will keep with me always the Bobby Robson of every day, a person who had extraordinary passion for life and for football, with an extraordinary enthusiasm. Bobby Robson is one of those people who never die, not so much for what he did in his career, for one victory more or less, but for what he knew to give to those who had, like me, the good fortune to know him and walk by his side. My thoughts and embraces go to all his loved ones.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson shared these touching comments:

In my 23 years working in England there is not a person I would put an inch above him. I was never too big or proud to ask him for advice, which he gave freely and unconditionally. And I’m sure I am speaking for a lot of people when I say that. I mourn the passing of a great friend, a wonderful individual, a tremendous football man and somebody with passion and knowledge of the game that was unsurpassed.

His character was hewn out of the coalface; developed by the County Durham mining background that he came from. His parents instilled in him the discipline and standards which forged the character of a colossal human being. He added his own qualities to that which he passed on to his sons. The strength and courage he showed over the past couple of years when battling against his fifth bout of cancer was indescribable. Always a smile, always a friendly word with never a mention of his own problems.

The world, not just the football world, will miss him. Let’s hope it won’t be long before another like him turns up because we could never get enough of them.

There will be another of tributes to Robson in the upcoming English Premier League season. Some teams have already announced plans to honor Robson with a black uniform arm band, while other longer lasting tributes are in the works.

The Quality Design Of The Fenwick Fly Rod

Published by Courtney Hickman under Outdoor Sporting

Many fishermen agree that quality drips from the tips of the Fenwick fly rod. Fenwick began turning out their products back in 1952, and have never looked back. When it comes to design and the utilization of new technology, they lead the way in their area of expertise.

A lot of people who have tried and tested the Fenwick rods, will tell you that the older traditional models seem to fair better than the newer ones. But it is probably more about individual taste and preferences, than in actual performance. All Fenwick rods give a limited warranty of five years on their rods.

In the decades of the sixties, seventies, and in the first few years of the eighties, Fenwick turned out a huge amount of their glass rods. So many that it is quite easy to find them being sold on the secondary market today. And being on the secondary market, make it easy to find them at a bargain too. They still have the same performance abilities, the same quality design and action, and they still deliver the integrity of the Fenwick brand.

Many of these older rods are catching the eyes of collectors more than catching fish. This is due to the high quality of the craftsmanship. The very first blanks were Grizzly made, featuring the old aluminum ferrules. This was when they had the O-rings. From there they were able to design some ferrules that had the tip go over top butt fiberglass. These became patented as the Feralite ferrule, and were copied by nearly all rod makers afterwards.

They then began making rods with E-glass. These rods also featured the Feralite ferrule, but had a more crisp action in them, which made for better control in certain areas of the casting. Later on Fenwick improved on these again by adding some Fenglass line. They still made their blanks from E-glass, but the work was shipped over to China. The Western style grips were still on these rods.

The most common thing you hear about the old Fenwick fly rods that is slightly negative, is that they are a little heavier than other rods. But they still pack quality performance into their designs. In their time they were considered very lightweight, but as designers progressed in materials and technology, other rods were made that were lighter than the Fenwick models.

Fenwick made the move from their fiberglass rods to graphite in the seventies. This enabled them to produce a rod that was lighter still, and also stronger and had even better control action. This was the birth of their Lunkerstick, which became extremely popular among bass fishermen. Fenwick was first in producing an all graphite rod, and was leader in fly rod innovation under the control of Phil Clock.

Many still say today that quality drips from the tips of the Fenwick fly rod. And with good reason. Once they had the graphite material down, they focused on technical improvements. Their claim to fame for this is the Fenwick Flippin Stick used for catching bass. They are still in the business of improving their designs and staying ahead of their market, producing rods for both freshwater and saltwater fishing.

Show Your Family The Woodcock Tradition

Published by Donna Paul under Outdoor Sporting

For me it is an eternal wonder as it is for most bird watchers to discover springtime skydance with the American Woodcock (Scolopax minor). The males are the dancers. The females observe in silence from nearby bushes. The song and dance performance will long be remembered as magnificent by all who take part in this springtime ritual of courtship observation.

Go to a clearing near a thicket, preferably only a tad moist. Look and pay attention from your hidden and low viewing point. Often I would get to the best observation post about a around 30 minutes before the drama was to begin. While I sit still on my camping stool, with night binoculars at hand, my companions and I would wait for chunky little brown birds to show themselves.

How did I know when the dance would begin? Without the aid of analog or digital watches, these sturdy little birds would begin at just about the same time each evening when the light and temperature were just right, about 22 minutes past sunset. I never saw them perform this ritual in the rain or on exceptionally cloudy evenings.

Once the family discovered this event just by reading Aldo Leopold’s 1949 classic A Sand County Almanac, it was impossible to skip this annual milestone. Leopold considered this the beginning of spring in the northern woods and named it the “skydance”.

It is hard to think these stubby little gamebirds belong to the same family as the sandpipers we view skittering along the sands at the sea. They have very short legs, an unusually long bill that has a specialized tip that’s devised for catching earthworms in the soil. Their mottled brown color looks a great deal like fallen leaves on the forest floor.

At times there would be more than one male in the vicinity. Those were exciting times. Each male bird kept its own timing so you actually could see one going up as you were hearing another make its “peent” sound on the ground. This indefatigable male would turn and “peent” again in another direction, over and over, presumably to draw the interest of females from all around. The “peent” is a sound like that from a nighthawk except its a bit deeper buzz.

The stout little gamebird shoots straight up into the sky silently. Truthfully that with good hearing or an amplifier it is possible to hear his wings twittering which has a melodic sound as he ascends and does spiral loops until he’s about 300 feet high before he dives back with twittering sounds when he starts his return. The twittering sound is produced by air passing between wing feathers. His zig-zag dive to the exact same place on the ground is silent with the exception of the flutterof his smooth wings flapping to a halt. How he finds his precise spot is a mystery if you ask me. But seconds once he lands and settles, he starts his directional peenting pattern again.

Even on a regular night you’ll probably see about 6 sky dance dives per male American Woodcock. They would resume a short while before dawn the next morning. This elaborate courtship ritual carries on nightly for months, in some areas approximately four months. It seems to be the activity the males do as the females hatch the brood and grow into fledgling size and then leave the nest. When I first began my annual skydance observations, I thought it was all a courtship ritual to attract a mate. Today I’d say I don’t know if in addition, it has another sort of function that goes beyond the first courtship. I guess you would have to ask a woodcock!

The General Psychology Of Tennis (Part 2)

Published by Gail Jones under Outdoor Sporting

The hard-hitting, erratic, net-rushing player is a creature of impulse. There is no real strategy to his/her game, no understanding of your game. He will make brilliant coups on the spur of the moment, largely by instinct; but there is no, mental power of consistent thinking. It is an interesting sort of character.

The most dangerous player is the one who mixes his/her strategy from back to fore court at the command of an ever-alert mind. This/her is the player to study and learn from. He is a player with a definite purpose. A player who has an answer to every problem you present him in your game. He is the most subtle antagonist in the world of tennis. He is of the school of Brookes. Second only to him is the player of slavish determination that fixes his/her mind on one strategy and sticks to it, bitterly, fiercely fighting to the end, with no thought of changing.

This is the player whose psychology is fairly simple to work out, but whose mental viewpoint is difficult to derail, because he never permits himself to think about anything but his game. This/her player is your Johnston or your Wilding. I respect the mental capacity of Brookes more, but I admire the determination of Johnston.

Pick out your kind from your own mental processes, and then plan your game along the lines best suited to you. When two men are on the same level as regards stroke, strength and equipment, the deciding factor in any match is the mental standpoint. Luck, as it is called, is usually no more than seizing the psychological advantage of a break in the game, and turning it to your own account. People talk a lot about the “shots we have made.” But few people realize the importance of the “shots we have missed.”

The science of missing shots is just as important as that of making them, and at times a miss by an inch is of more value than a return that is killed by your opponent. Allow me to explain. A player forces you far out of court with an angle-shot. You run hard to it, and having reached it, you smash it hard and fast down the side-line, missing it by an inch. Your opponent is shocked and shaken, realizing that your shot might just as well have gone in as out. He will expect you to try it again and he will not take the risk next time. He will strive to play the ball, and may make an error. You have thus taken some of your opponent’s confidence, and increased his/her chance of error, all because of a miss.

However, if you had just tapped back that ball, and it had been killed, your opponent would have felt increasingly confident of your inability to put the ball out of his/her reach, while you would only have been out of breath to no avail.

Let’s just say that you had succeeded with that shot down the sideline. It was a seemingly impossible get. First it amounts to TWO points, because it stole one away from your opponent that should have been his/her and gave you one that you should never have had. Second it also worries your opponent, because he feels that he has lost a big chance.

The psychology of a tennis match is fascinating, but readily understood. Both men start with equal chances. Once one player establishes a real lead, his/her confidence goes up, while his/her opponent worries, and his/her mental viewpoint becomes weaker. The sole aim of the first player is to hold his/her lead, thus holding his/her confidence.

If the second player draws even or pulls ahead, the inevitable result is an even greater contrast in psychology of the players. First, there is the natural confidence of the leader of the game, but it is coupled with the great stimulus of having turned a seemingly sure-fire defeat into a probable victory. The case of the other player is the reverse. He is apt to lose confidence and play worse. The collapse of his game plan soon follows.

6 Ways To Take Care Of Goalkeeper Gloves

Published by Steve Jones under Football

The position of goalkeeper is one of the most important in football. It is often goalkeepers who have the most impact on the final score so it’s important the equipment they use is of a good standard and well looked after. Goalkeepers gloves are quite delicate and require a lot of looking after if they are to last an entire season. The more worn they are the less effective they are.

The aim of this article is to provide you with all the tricks and tips you need for keeping your goalkeeper gloves in great condition throughout the season.

I. It’s important to remove any dirt that has built up on them as soon as you’ve finished playing so find the nearest tap and give them a rinse.

II. When you get home, it’s time to give them a more thorough clean. Run them under warm water again and press out all the dirt you can find. Don’t stop until you can see the original colour of the foam, only then will you know all the dirt has gone.

III. The inside of the glove can get very sweaty as it is in constant contact with the palm of the hand. Clean it with cheap shampoo to rid it of any lingering smells

IV. Once the gloves are completely clean, run them under cold water to remove any suds or foam that may remain. Make sure any debris is removed from the Velcro straps otherwise they will become difficult to fasten.

V. Leave the goalkeepers gloves in a warmish room but away from direct sunlight to dry. Some keepers like to play in moist gloves so remove them from the light when they are at a suitable dampness.

VI. Once they are dry, store the gloves in a protective bag. This will prevent them from getting dirty by the next time you play in them.

Out of all the tips above, the most important is to dry them off thoroughly before you store them away, whether you washed them or not. Failure to do so will cause them to go mouldy or even to rot.

If you want to purchase either Fingersave Goalkeeper Gloves or Sells Goalkeeper Gloves please follow the links provided.
