Published by Dekster Primo under Football

Like all good shinpad makes, Adidas design their shin pads to be as comfortable as possible whilst offering substantial protection to the players that wear them. There are literally hundreds of different styles and designs so there is something for everyone. There is also quite a large range of price points so there is something for every budget. At the bottom of the range is the Adidas Anatomic, which retails at around 12 and is one of the more basic Adidas Shinpads. It has a hard layer of plastic on the front to protect the shin and a strap that keeps it in place.

The majority of shin pads come with a polyester sock which contains a protection pad that protects the ankle bone from opponents studs. It is detachable from the main shinpad and held in place with a strip of velcro. This means that you do not have to wear the protective pad every time you wear the shinpad. It is this flexibility that makes Adidas stand out from it’s competitors.

Adidas stock a huge range of different coloured shinpads, so it’s possible the buy a pair that match your teams kits. These come at a range of different price points so everyone is catered for.

It’s a little known fact that Adidas also have a range of shinpads designed specifically for women. They are made so they fit the shapes of a women far better than mens shinpads wood and provide greater protection for women footballers. Adidas have developed their own shin pad technology called ‘ClimaCool’ that manages the build up of heat and moisture by letting the legs breathe. It does so by allowing a flow of air between the shin pad and the leg to regulate the temperature.

Every season the technology behind shinpads improves and this shows no sign of stopping. In recent years this has seen adidas produce lighter and lighter shinpads whilst keeping the levels of protection the same. Because the shinpads are so much smaller they no longer slow players down as they offer next to no resistance.

The History of the Goalkeeper Shirt

Published by Aron Dankamp under Football

Within the footballing world it is widely acknowledged that goalkeepers are slightly different to the rest of the players on a football team. There is something about their personality that makes them thrive on the isolation and pressure that goalkeepers experience in every game. It’s not only there mind that is different; they are different in the way they dress when on a football field.

Goalkeepers wear a shirt that is different to the other members of the team so that they stand out. They also wear goalkeeper gloves which were invented to protect their hands from damage when saving shots with their hands. This article focuses on the shirt and explains a little about it’s history.

As football matches became commonplace at the end of the 18th century, goalkeepers identified themselves by wearing different colour socks than the rest of the team. After a while they start to wear stripes of the the same colour on their shirts and this soon evolved into the goalkeeper shirt.

Until the 1970’s rules for what the goalkeeper shirt could look like were very strict. They were limited to the colours of blue, white, red and green. Green soon became the most popular colour as very few teams had it as the primary colour on their shirt, and therefore it was far less likely to clash than some of the earlier mentioned colours.

The position of goalkeeper was the last position on pitch to adapt the shirt numbering system. It was thought that goalkeepers were already different enough to other members of their team so didn’t need a number to identify them. A good pub quiz fact – The first outfield player to play a game with the number 1 on his back was Ossie Ardiles during his spell at Tottenham Hotspur.

There are two types of goalkeeper shirt available today – one is a v neck polo sweater, the other a vest with long sleeves. The vest is the most popular as it tends to be tighter and therefore offers lest resistance to goalkeepers when they are diving to save the ball.

The History Of The Rugby World Cup

Published by Adriana Noton under Soccer

Rugby is a sport that is enjoyed all over the world, throughout the countries of the British Commonwealth in particular. It is a gruelling sport that involves 15 players on each side and is particularly fanatically supported in countries such as New Zealand and Wales where they see it as their main national sport. Due to the popularity of the sport, every four years there is a Rugby World Cup where all of the best teams in the world come to test themselves against each other in pursuit of the grandest prize of all.

The first World Cup was held in 1987 and was hosted by the juggernauts of rugby in Australia and New Zealand. Since this time, there have been for additional tournaments, each one held at intervals or four years. In 1987 New Zealand became the inaugural winners of the World Cup, beating France in the final by 29 points to 9.

Four years later the Rugby world cup came to Europe and was hosted by Great Britain throughout different stadiums in England, Ireland, and also France across the pond. For this tournament, a qualifying tournament was used to decide the final lineup of the 32 teams that were to compete. Four years ago it had been an invite only tournament, but now some of the lesser-known countries had to go through qualifying periods in order to make sure they got into the tournament.

It was Australia who turned up as champions on this occasion, as the hosts England were defeated in the final by a very small margin of 12 to 6.

Four years later in 1995 the tournament was first set up in South Africa. This was a very grand moment in the history of rugby as South Africa were allowed to compete in the first time due to the end of apartheid and the boycott against them on the world sporting scene.

South Africa were relatively un-fancied as a team to win the tournament, but they had some great sporting players in the team. However with a fantastic home crowd behind them, they rose up through the tournament and managed to get the final against the powerhouse of world rugby New Zealand. In a thrilling encounter they managed to overturn New Zealand by a small margin of just three points and became the champions of rugby the first time at their first attempt.

In 1991 the World Cup once again returned to the shores of Europe with whales being the host and matches played all over the five Nations. In a great upset, a fantastic semi-final saw the dominant New Zealand beaten by France, who then stepped up against Australia in the final. However, France could not repeat the correct efforts, and Australia became the first team to win the World Cup for a second time.

By 2003, the dominant team in world rugby had for the first time changed from being New Zealand and other teams from the southern hemisphere and the first time England were the team to beat at the tournament. With the great Johnny will concern at number 10 and his trusty left boot in order, England were favourites to overturn New Zealand if they were to meet them. However this was not necessary, as Australia turned up and managed to defeat New Zealand on home turf, meeting England in the final in the greatest ever be much played. True to form, they will concern provided the finishing touch to a magnificent effort by the England team.

Most recently, the World Cup has been played in 2007 and was hosted by France. South Africa became only the second team to win the trophy for a second time as they overturned the current champions and relatively unfancied England in the final. In 2011 the competition will be played in New Zealand. Were the best team in the world be able to complete a famous victory on this occasion?

The Most Substantial Happenings In Super Bowl XLIV

Published by Daniel Greenbeck under Football

This year’s Super Bowl was definitely one that kept all the fans of the game watching it and getting so much out of it, just like the last two Super Bowl games were. That is so refreshing when you think about the games that took place in prior years before these three and how they were just disappointing to the fans.

The Indianapolis Colts were the team that was picked to win the game, but the New Orleans Saints really gave folks a surprise when they beat them. Drew Brees , along with the rest of the offense, played an outstanding game, but that’s not to say that their defense didn’t play just as well, doing a great job taking on Peyton Manning, the Colt’s quarterback.

Let’s take a look at a few of the top stories from Super Bowl XLIV. If you missed out on the game, here are the things you should know about.

To begin with, although he started the game on shaky ground by only getting three completions from his first seven pass attempts, Drew Brees then went on to have a close to perfect game. He got 29 out of the next 32 attempts and finished the game with a total of 32 completions from 39 attempts, 2 touchdown passes, zero turnovers and 288 total yards.

Numbers like these are remarkable, and this is one of the most efficient quarterback performances in the history of the Super Bowl. It should come as no surprise that Brees won the award.

Perhaps just as impressive was the performance of the young Saints kicker Garrett Hartley, who made all three of his field goal attempts. Having successfully made kicks from 44, 46, and 47 yards, all of these were integral to the team’s victory, and extremely clutch considering that the Saints trailed the Colts when he made two of his kicks.

Last but not least, Peyton Manning, the quarterback for the Colts, sure stirred up a lot of controversy when the game was over. He quickly left the field without offering a handshake or even saying congratulations to any of the players on the Saints team.

It’s customary for the losing team’s players to congratulate the winners, so many are calling Manning’s act one of poor sportsmanship. Drew Brees, on the other hand, said that he understood Manning’s frustration and doesn’t hold anything against him for it.

Do Fantasy Sports Have More Drawbacks Than Positives?

Published by Carlos Reese under Football

One of my hobbies is playing fantasy sports leagues. I’ve playing for a while now and have fantasy teams in baseball, basketball and football. I’ve also tried other basic, sports based games.

At the end of the day, this is good, harmless fun. You act as a team manager and buy and sell players and build your team, giving you areal sense of satisfaction when your team wins.

As with all things that you really enjoy doing; fantasy leagues get very addictive. There are loads of stats and positions to check and I find myself doing this constantly, and also checking out my competitor’s results.

I’ve even watched matches that I couldn’t care less about just to see how it will affect my teams’ placings. I will also follow games for the same reason. There are some that actually wonder if it is harmless considering how addicted some players get.

A true sports fan loves a good competition where things are nip and tuck; it brings out our competitive nature. There are lots of positive things about playing these leagues, and like a real sport, they keep us occupied for the duration of the season.

On the flip side, I do tend to get rather over involved and lose my temper when players put in bad performances and feel that they have let the rest of the team down. This often overshadows the actual result.

Like many of us, I have favorite teams in real life that I have been a fan of since childhood. Why now, for the first time ever, is my allegiance being tested by teams that don’t even exist? If fixtures clash I’m in the horrible situation of having to choose between them.

Do I have a problem? Well if I do there are millions of us. This is a topic for hot debate by many sports enthusiasts.

Will The Ravens Make It To The Big Game?

Published by Matt Ryan under Football

The Baltimore Ravens are a fairly new franchise in the NFL. It took a lot of time, stress, and conversations for Art Modell to get the NFL to agree to the Ravens moving to Baltimore (from Cleveland). The first two years, of their new career, was spent in Memorial Stadium (the home of the Baltimore Colts). After this stint, the Raven’s new stadium was ready for play. Over the next 10 years the stadium would undergo numerous name changes, leaving the Ravens without a true ‘home’.

The move to the stadium was supposed to motivate the team, which would — in turn — help them to play better. This; however, did not happen. Their next two years were just like the two years previous, unimpressive. After a 6-10 year, the team got a new head coach by the name of Brian Billick (who replaced Marchibroda). The season of 1999, their first year with Billick, had a rough start but ended on good terms. The Ravens had their best year yet with an 8-8 record at the end of ‘99.

Not even ten years later, the 2008 season, the Baltimore Ravens nearly made it to the Super Bowl. In a fight on home turf against the Jaguars, they won their spot in the AFC playoffs placement. An unfortunate turn of events allowed them to slip out of the running for the Super Bowl, but they made it farther than they ever had.

With the ‘08 season leaving sports enthusiasts with some hope, the ‘09 season had nothing but positive openings. Raven fans had an exciting year in 2009. The team played exceptionally hard during summer training. Preseason practice and games proved this to be true. Their ‘08 season gave them 26th place in draft picks, from which the Ravens went home with Michael Oher.

The Baltimore Ravens, still a fairly infantile team on the league with only 11 seasons under their belts, had a strong year. Sports enthusiasts and fans alike wait in anticipation to see what the Ravens will dish up in 2010. Rumor has it, the Ravens may just have the drive that will get them to the Super Bowl. The Ravens are going to be a hot topic in 2010; don’t miss it!

One of the Oldest Teams In The NFL — The Chicago Bears

Published by Matt Ryan under Football

The Chicago Bears, beloved NFL franchise since 1919, have had many glorious years, with many more to come. This is one of those old-time teams that has a place in the hearts of thousands; a team full of passion and fight, a team that does what it takes to get to the end. Two short years after they were founded, the Bears began their rivalry with the Green Bay Packers, one thing fans can count on year in and year out. One year after this rivalry began, the Bears took their current colors, and have kept them ever since. That is one of the great things about this team, besides their talent, the fact that they are stable and are not going anywhere anytime soon.

Wrigley Field, another popular field to Chicagoans, was used as the Bears’ stomping grounds in the old days, mostly for scrimmage games. The team, obviously, needed a stadium they could call home, which they had not too long after they were a team, a stadium we all know as Soldier Field. Over the years the stadium has taken a lot of abuse, and required quite a bit of remodeling. The entire stadium was pretty much tore down and rebuilt by 2003, leaving only one wall from the original stadium. The new stadium was so different and new, in fact, that it was even renamed the Soldier Field II.

The Chicago Bears have always made record sales for home games, and even games on the road. Ticket sales, for the Chicago bears, are well within the top 20 highest sales across the entire league. In fact, they are within the top 10 most profitable teams in the NFL, and its history, with a cash flow of 1.1 billion dollars. The combination of their solid history, the 2009 roster changes, and summer training, the 2009 season was just as eventful as every other season the Bears have given their fans. Jay Cutler, a Pro Bowl quarterback from the Broncos, joined the Bears in the spring of 2009, which added some great talent to their offensive line.

Over the many years that the Bears have been providing solid entertainment for sports fanatics, they have retired more than ten numbers. Some of these retired numbers were from original players like George Halas and McAfee, Bill George, Harold Grange, and Sid Luckman. Walter Payton, loved and adored from the 80s, is yet another retired number along with Bill Hewitt, Dick Butkus, Clyde Turner, Gayle Sayers, Brian Piccolo, Bronko Nagurski, and Willie Galimore. The Chicago bears have deep history, and have made a name, for them, that will stand through time. Their fans support the Bears in a manner that would nearly make you believe they were part of the team.

Football fans experience adrenaline like no other when watching a game, especially live, but nothing compares to the adrenaline a Chicago Bears fan experiences while sitting on the edge of their seat at Soldier Field II. In fact, Bears games are so thrilling you don’t even have to be a fan to feel as if you are in the game; they will keep you begging for more. You must see the Bears live in 2010 as it will be phenomenal season.
