CEH Center’s Dr. Landrigan on Lead in Toys: 2 of 2

Published by Larry under Sports Equipment

Recently covered in the news, massive recalls of toys and baby products have raised the concerns of parents everywhere. Dr. Philip J. Landrigan of Mount Sinai’s Children’s Environmental Health Center talks on lead in toys from China giving parents practical advice on how they can protect their children and themselves. Lead in toys has become a major problem in the USA. Lead-painted trains, lead-painted dolls and lead-contaminated plastic lunch boxes imported from China and other nations have become a major new threat to the health of American children. This is a very serious issue. Tens of thousands of children have been placed at risk of lead exposure this year because of contaminated imports. Millions of toys have been recalled. This situation reflects the grave weakness of the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and the lack of federal controls on imported toys. What can parents do? Most importantly, parents should avoid all painted toys this holiday season. Also they should avoid brightly colored plastic toys, because some of them have been shown to contain high levels of lead. Our recommended toys this year are: • unpainted wooden toys • sports equipment such as balls and gloves • books Parents should consider writing letters or sending emails to their Senators, Congressional representatives, state and local officials, and the White House to complain about the current situation. It is simply not right that this country should allow the entry of millions of

How to Stay Warm with Catalytic Heaters

Published by Scott King under Outdoor Sporting

Different areas of the world face different climates as the seasons change. In some parts temperature are such that climatic conditions reach extremes and citizens face a lot of problems. In other parts of the world perfectly normal climatic conditions are faced which make life a lot easier for the people living there.

New inventions and models are being released into the market each day. Technology has helped make things more sophisticated, but at the same time helped make life very easy for us. Fans, air conditioners, heaters, freezers and coolers are all things that make high or low temperature conditions bearable for us. Though new, better and more expensive models are released each day these inventions are now part of most of our lives and life would be very tough for us without them.

With climatic changes you face low temperatures and high temperatures. Low temperatures make things very hard even though heaters and fireplaces are used. Nothing keeps itself warm especially water and your body. This is one of the reasons for which people often have to wear layers of clothing or heavy clothing so that they can protect themselves from getting ill. High temperature conditions can be tolerated with the help of fans and air conditioners and the wearing of very light clothing.

Coleman catalytic heaters are also safer as compared to those heaters with radiant burners as there is no flame. They are cheap, transportable and easily disposable.

Just because your granddaughters or grandsons come visit you when the weather is cold you would not want to miss out on a camping or fishing trip with them. In such cases you can bring these portable heaters to use. However, it is very important that they are used in area where there is ventilation.

Illegal Fishing: Blocking Access to the EU Market

Published by Larry under Outdoor Sporting

ec.europa.eu ec.europa.eu Illegal fishing on the high seas is possibly the biggest single global threat to sustainable fishing. Recent estimates show that it represents between 15-20% of global catches. As a major world market for fisheries products, the EU proposes the establishment of a system to prevent, deter and eliminate this practice by shutting the door for products of illegal fishing, thus depriving the poachers of their sole motivation: profits.
