Fly fishing in New Zealand; monster trout battle

Published by Larry at 6:39 pm under Outdoor Sporting

Fly fishing for trout in New Zealand at 6am Somewhere, far, far away, in a small stream hidden in a the remote kiwi wilderness, a monster trout stirs, blissfully unaware of the international stardom awaiting it… A flinch for the pheasant tail nymph and a battle ensues as Olly the otter clutches the camera and Dougie the Nose heaves on his splint of graphite (also known as sting)! Eventually a huge trout comes to the net, albeit in an unorthodox fashion!

    Hey Troutster,

Thanks for writing! That fish gave a heck of a fight! I live in Europe and we very rarely get trout of that size over here although last summer I was fishing in Scotland and hooked what I thought must be a salmon…… time went by and eventually a 6lb brown trout rolled over the net! Amazing. America has some incredible fishing – I will make it over there one day to try my luck in Montana, Idaho Falls, Alaska etc….

    Cheers

    Hi Lazza,

So pleased the video made your morning! Thanks for writing in. It made my morning to know that it made your morning! I always get carried away on the river. Some things never change – I am still like a five year old galloping around with a fishing net even though I am supposed to be an adult!

    Cheers

    Hi Stip,

Try find a good website that tells you how to get started because there is just so much to tell. A very short answer to your question is get a 9ft #6 rod (one of the most versatile trout rods on the planet). Then get a line and reel to match the rod (go to a local fly fishing store if you can find one – they will help a lot). Then find somewhere to practice casting like a garden or some grass then move on to water and have a go for some fish. Hope that helps.

    Cheers

    Hi Carlketts,

Cheers. Amazing fish indeed. I am afraid I promised a good friend not to reveal the location of the stream in question, but I can tell you that there are hundreds like it in the West Coast of South Island not too far from Mt Cook!

Good luck and thanks for the message,

    Robbie

    Hi Gompels,

Fly fishing is a great sport. The tips I would say are 1) learn about and look after the environment in which you fish because that will look after your fishing.
    2) Concentrate on delicate and accurate casting presentation rather than power or distance. The better your casting, the more fish you will catch.
    3) When it comes to flies that less is more. You only need a few patterns to fish the world over so don’t worry too much about the 1000s of flies out there. Good luck, Robbie

Man! I’ve never seen a trout so large. In the NE region of the US most of our trout are much smaller. Still terrific, but nothing like that one…
    stunning!

It’s called a dry dropper rig. Allows you to dry fly fish and nymph fish at the same time. Also good for conditions where trout are spooky and a large indicator would scare the trout, a dry fly has a much more delicate presentation.
