NBA Noteworthy Story Lines In This Season

Published by Johnny Reese under Basketball

There have been quite a few ups and downs in the world of basketball this season. This season has been an interesting one with plenty going on in the way of performance and with player news.

In this article, I intend to look at both the good and the bad, the highlights and the low points of the 09 to 10 season.

There is just no predicting what\’s coming up in seasons to come. Just last season two particular teams ranked at the bottom of the league but have proven themselves successful players over the past season.

First is the Oklahoma City Thunder, a team that people believed had a bright future but never thought they would be competitive this quickly. Thanks to superstar Kevin Durant, the team has suddenly morphed from one of the worst in the league to one with a winning record this season.

The Memphis Grizzlies may be an even bigger surprise. While people knew that the Thunder had the potential to be a good team, everyone had written off Memphis entering the season.

This team has now seen some great play on the court due to the team work of Rudy Gay, Marc Gasol, OJ Mayo and Zach Randolph and as a result may even end up making the playoffs.

However, the incident at the Gilbert Arenas really brought down the reputation and image of the league itself with guns being pointed at teammates, the Washington Guard has now been suspended for the rest of the season.

Where there are new players there is a glimpse into the future of basketball and players such as Tyreke Evans and Brandon Jennings who are two top performing rookies are providing us with hope for the future of basketball games, so it\’s not all bad in the world of basketball after all.

Giants Defeat Redskins In NFC East Battle

Published by Ross Everett under Football

The New York Giants jumped out to a 17-0 lead against their NFC East rivals from Washington, and were never threatened as they went on to beat the Redskins by a final score of 23-17. Defensive stalwart Osi Umenyiora returned from a serious knee injury and scored a touchdown on a fumble return, while the Giants offense controlled the ball well and completely dominated the time of possession. The Giants held a lopsided edge of 36:08 to 23:52 in that department, which helped them overcome a couple of turnovers.

NFL sports betting enthusiasts who took the Redskins as +5 road underdogs were likely not heartened by the near miss on a backdoor cover. The Redskins scored a touchdown with 1:30 left to get within a \” point of the spread but the Giants still got the cover by the slimmest of margins. The Skins dropped to 13-17 ATS over the past three years with the setback, while New York improved their pointspread mark to an impressive 27-11 against the number. NFL totals players also witnessed a late game change of fortune due to the Skins touchdown, with the 7 points pushing the point total OVER the posted 37. New York evened their O/U record at 19-19 over the past three seasons, while Washington made a dent in their lopsided UNDER biased record. The Skins have gone UNDER in 21 of their last 33 lined contests.

None of the Giants players were as elated with the victory as defensive end Umenyiora. Hed missed the entire 2008 season due to a knee injury, and was happy to not only be back on the field but contributing to a victory:

\”It was unbelievable and now all that is in the past. I can\’t even explain it to you, when something like that is taken away from you. Last year I missed it. I was happy I was able to come back in there.\”

His touchdown return came in the second quarter, when he knocked the ball away from Redskins QB Jason Campbell and headed for the endzone:

\”To be honest, I don\’t know what happened. That\’s the way most plays are made. You just go out there and sometimes good things happen. They always get on me about knocking the ball out and not picking it up. When I saw it, I just picked it up.\”

Campbell chalked it up to him holding onto the ball too long:

\”Osi made a great play on the ball. It\’s something you have to understand as a quarterback you have to feel it more or slide up in the pocket.\”

Umenyiora affirmed that it couldnt have been a better return to the NFL:

\”Not only was it a W, but it was against an NFC East opponent. It was a great game.\”

The Redskins will have a great opportunity to cash in their first win of the season this week as they step down in class to host the lowly St. Louis Rams. The Skins are a -10 home favorite with the total set at 36. Theyll continue feasting on the NFLs bottom feeders the following week as they travel to Detroit to play the hapless Lions before returning home for a game against the Tampa Bay Bucs on October 4th. The Giants have another big game on Sunday as they head to Dallas to face the Cowboys in the first regular season game in the new Cowboys Stadium. The Giants are a +3 road dog with the total set at 44. New York will carry a couple of amazing ATS runs into the game\”the Giants are 12-3 against the spread as an underdog over the past three years, and have a 15-3 mark on the road. Theyll remain on the road for the following two weeks, facing Kansas City and Tampa Bay.

Stampeders Come Back To Beat Argos At Home

Published by Ross Everett under Football

Judy Garland famously said in her role as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz that theres no place like home. The Toronto Argonauts would likely take issue with that sentiment. On Friday night, the Argos lost a close one to the Calgary Stampeders at the Rogers Centre by a final score of 23-20. The loss extended the Argos franchise record home losing streak to ten consecutive games.

Calgary hasnt done well in Toronto in recent years, and Henry Burris was happy with the victory despite the Argos recent struggles on their own field:

\”Rogers Centre has never been a fun place for us to play. We\’ve had some tough games here against some hard-hitting Argos teams. This team has been through a lot and with the belief we have in one another, we were able to fight back and respond when it really counted.\”

Toronto could have tied the game as time ran out with a long field goal, but Argos coach Bart Andrus kept the offense on the field for a last ditch effort to score a touchdown rather than go for the tie.

Placekicker Justin Medlock has only missed one field goal attempt all year, and Andrus is already hearing some criticism of this decision:

\”I\’ll take the heat on the call to not kick the field goal. The distance bothered me. That was my worry. The 57-yarder against Winnipeg came with the roof open. I just wasn\’t comfortable with it.\”

Medlock all but second guessed his coach when asked about the potential game tying field goal try that he didnt get to make:

\”I definitely thought I could\’ve made it but never got the chance. Maybe I should\’ve run on to the field. I hit the crossbar in practice from 60 yards out.\”

Calgary has won both games against Toronto this season, beating the Argos 44-9 at McMahon Stadium earlier this season. Stamps coach/GM John Hufnagel was particularly pleased with his team\’s effort on the road:

\”If it was going to be a close game I wanted our defence on the field at the end to protect the lead and that\’s what happened. I think it\’s really a big step for this football team. I\’m very pleased with the defence, I\’m very pleased with the offence in the second half when they had to answer points . . . we got the momentum back each and every time.\”

Next up for the Stampeders is a home and home series with their provincial rivals, the Edmonton Eskimos. Calgary will host Edmonton on Labour Day, and the teams will rematch in Edmonton four days later. Toronto and Hamilton will go at it in their traditional Labour Day tilt, with the first game of the set at Hamilton and the rematch back at the Rogers Centre in Toronto.

Wayne Rooney Scores Twice In Man U Victory Over AC Milan

Published by Ross Everett under Soccer

Manchester United is in good shape to advance to the Champions League soccer quarterfinals following a 3-2 win over AC Milan at the San Siro. The competition itself was overshadowed by the fact that it was the first time that David Beckham had played against his old team since leaving Old Trafford in 2003, and Wayne Rooney squashed Milan\’s early hopes with two goals to put the game on ice. Clarance Seedorf scored at the 85 minute mark to make the score respectable, but Man U controlled play after the halftime break.

AC Milan got on the board first just three minutes into the game as Beckham set up Ronaldinho\’s goal that sent the San Siro into a frenzy. Paul Scholes evened the score at the 36 minute mark and the teams went into the halftime break tied at 1-1. Rooney would net his first goal at the 66 minute mark and would score again just 8 minutes later to give Man U a 3-1 lead.

The 24 year old Rooney is becoming recognized as one of the best strikers in soccer. He\’s now got 25 goals on the year with 19 games left to play. He\’s also received high marks from the soccer press for his playmaking, heady play and overall attitude. The consensus is that he\’s already one of the best in the world and is only getting better.

After the game, Beckham complimented Rooney on his play and suggested that he receive consideration for the World Player of the Year award:

\”I hope he is a contender for the World Player of the Year and the Ballon D\’Or. I would love to see him win every title possible. I have seen Wayne from being a young lad. I played in his debut for England and I have watched him score goals week in and week out ever since. It is amazing to see.\’\’

\”He looks after himself and works hard. The way he plays is the way he trains. That is why he is so good and why Wayne is ready for any game. It doesn\’t matter how many games he has played or how many he will be involved in to the end of the season, he will be ready for anything.\’\’

There\’s a good chance that Beckham and Rooney will be teammates on England\’s World Cup team this summer. Beckham made note of that fact:

\”I wouldn\’t want to see him do it again against us in a few weeks but of course I\’d like it in the World Cup.\”

Rooney\’s sizzling play and Beckham\’s veteran leadership and dominant free kicks are a big reason why England is among the World Cup betting favorites before the team has even been made official. England will start World Cup play on June 12 against the United States. England is a +600 choice to win the World Cup, third favorite behind Spain and Brazil.
