Shaun White – Multi Talented Sportsman
How closely do you watch the world of snowboarding? How closely do you watch the Olympics? If the answer to either of those questions is “closely”, then you probably know the name Shaun White. After all, he was only the United States gold medalist for the Men’s Half-pipe in 2006! It’d be pretty hard to miss that if you closely followed either the world of snowboarding, or the Olympics!
Shaun White was born Sep three,’86, in San Diego California. He lived there for almost all of his life, though he now lives and works out of Carlsbad, California. His early life was fraught with difficulty, as he was born with an inborn heart defect known as tetralogy of Fallot. Fortunate for him, they caught it at an early age, and he had 2 cardiac surgeries before the age of 5. Tetralogy of Fallot leaves a sixty p.c survival rate if not caught by the age of four, so had they not caught it, it’s possible we wouldn’t be able to discuss Shaun White today. But they went and did, and he went on to turned into one of the most famous names in snowboarding.
Though White is widely recognized in the world of skate boarding, his first love has often been the snowboard. That love started when he was only 6 years of age, watching his big brother try to snowboard at June Mountain. His mum and dad announced that White was too junior to take lessons, but his pa clearly felt the pull of destiny. He took lessons and then taught White what he learned. His mummy concerned that maybe White was learning too fast, as mummies are likely to do. In a plan to slow her child down, she told him he could only board backwards ( or switch, as snowboarding terms go ). In the end , however , this only helped his career, as it allowed him to be skilled at both ways of boarding.
The Olympics isn’t the only event White has won big at. Every year since 2002, White has competed in the X-Games, a sports competition for extreme sports such as snowboarding, skateboarding, and BMX biking. Every year, he’s come home with either silver, or a gold medal. Now, with his win in the 2006 Olympics, he’s simply skyrocketed to world renowned fame. Where will White end up in the history books of snowboarding? Only time will tell, but no doubt it will be somewhere great!
The Olympic Games are always something to look out for. They are held every 4 years. There are the Summer Games and the Winter Games. In 2010, you can watch the Winter Olympics. This major event will take place in Vancouver.
